I still remember the first time I met the Bog of Shame. Picture a stretch of trail that looked harmless—just a 10-meter ribbon of dark earth after spring rain. Ten seconds later my tires were axle-deep and my pride was somewhere under the muck. Since then I’ve logged enough muddy miles to know that the right two moves are all that stand between a clean spin and an impromptu hike-a-bike.
Gear & Cadence: Spin, Don’t Grind
Before you even hit the slop, drop into a middle ring (or the small front chainring if you run 1x). Think “coffee grinder” cadence—70 to 80 rpm. That quick, light spin keeps the tire churning instead of churning holes. The moment you feel the pedals load up like you’re churning cement, downshift another click. Your legs stay fresh, the rear tire stays on top of the mud instead of drilling for fossils.
Line Choice: Follow the Tracks, Dodge the Puddles
Look for the faint double trench carved by riders who passed earlier. Those ruts have already squeezed out most of the water, leaving firmer soil. Ride inside them like you’re on invisible rails. If a puddle glows like black coffee, assume it’s hiding a foot-deep pothole—swerve wide or hop the bike over the shallow edge. Commit early; hesitation is what swaps your front wheel sideways and starts the slow-motion tip-over.
Stuck Already?
Hop off before the tire buries itself. A gloved hand or a stick clears the knobs in five seconds. Then push along the same rut—don’t try to remount until the ground feels like damp cake, not chocolate pudding.
That’s it. Two habits, zero fancy gear. I’ve ridden out of bogs that swallowed hiking boots just by spinning faster and trusting the ruts.
Want to see how these tricks look in real slop? I filmed a short clip last week—mud flying, cassette clicking, the whole messy ballet—plus the exact tire and PSI combo I trust when the sky opens up.
